About Chimney Dampers

The damper in your chimney controls the flow of air and smoke that passes through the flue, reducing the risks of house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Located at the “throat” of the chimney inside the base, the damper is out of sight but easily accessible. A closed damper keeps the interior air in and the exterior air out. An open damper, on the other hand, allows the exhaust and gases from a fireplace fire to escape through the chimney.

Knowing that your damper is working and how to use it properly are vital to protecting your home and family. The damper is operated manually via chain, switch, screw or lever. Be sure to shut the damper when your fireplace isn’t in use, and open it just prior to making a fire. If you feel a draft coming from your fireplace, then it’s time for an inspection.

The Many Benefits of Chimney Dampers

The Many Benefits of Chimney Dampers

A working damper:

  • Reduces downdrafts from the outside that, if allowed in, make your home cold and uncomfortable.

  • Improves the home’s indoor temperature and comfort by keeping the cold air out and the warm air in.

  • Allows the smoke to escape through the chimney, reducing the risks of fire and exposure to toxic gases.

  • Controls the intensity of the fire through adjustments to the amount of oxygen flowing through it.

  • Enhances energy efficiency by minimizing heat loss, thus potentially lowering your energy bills.
